The Force Unleashed 2 “Snow” :30

Here is a spot I had the pleasure to do all of the sound editorial, sfx design and mix on.  Dare I refer to a project like this as a “TV” spot anymore as all of this media is used in so many avenues now.  I’m never really sure of the life span of it.  There are  still times that they go to broadcast only.  Although more often than not, the same spots are now used in broadcast, internet sites, large conferences and media events and more.  This can make these projects quite a challenge to mix!   Basically I find that I  have to work to the lowest common denominator.  Which I believe has actually gotten lower since the rise of the internet age.

These days instead of full bandwidth mono with 10 – 12 db of dynamic range playing over a small tv speaker in someones living room.  We now have deal with lossy data compression,  pseudo stereo,  8 – 10 db of dynamic range playing over even smaller laptop speakers with less amplification and in a huge variety of environments!  I have to admit that sometimes we are given the opportunity to mix multiple versions, however more often than not, its a one size fits all scenario.  This being the case, I rarely will limit the frequency output of the final product much.  Rather I let the playback medium itself dictate the response curve.

This spot is one of these one for all versions.  I think it turned out well, however there is plenty of detail that you don’t get on your laptop speakers.  So, if possible, check it out on something larger!  : )

The Old Republic Trailer 2

This is the 2nd trailer that was created by Blur in Santa Monica for the upcoming Bioware and Lucasarts joint venture title The Old Republic. This was another intense project with lots of action and amazing visuals to match sound to.  I was in the middle of production on The Force Unleashed 2 as this one came down, so I enlisted some editorial help from my friend Pete Horner.  Other editorial work was done by the talented guys at LEC including Tom Bible and David Collins.

This trailer was mixed on a Digidesign D-command and three separate ProTools rigs in a “Pod” room at Skywalker Sound.  We set up the Fx and Foley on one machine, the Dialog and Music on another for playback and recorded to a third rig.  The D-command makes it really easy to control multiple machines from one control surface.  We also used Synergy to make switching between the multiple machines a snap.  Enjoy!

The Old Republic Trailer

Trailer for The Old Republic, an upcoming title co-produced by LucasArts and Bioware.

This is the first trailer for the newly announced  MMORG from Bioware and LucasArtsThe Old Republic.  It was a super fun and very rewarding project to work on.

I was a foley editor, sound effects editor and the re-recording mixer for this piece.  The concept and animation was created but the guys at Blur, who led by Dave Wilson, did an amazing job.   Not unlike so many other jobs, the video was delivered to us very close to the air date, giving the sound team about a week to do the sound editorial, ADR (for all of the warriors), foley and the mixing.  This was a lot to accomplish in that time frame.

Lego Indy 2

My crew and I recently finished working on the Indiana Jones LEGO 2 video game for TT games and Lucas Arts.

For the past few months I’ve been supervising the sound editorial and mixing of the cut-scenes for this exciting follow up to the huge hit from last year, on which I performed the same tasks.  This year we had 83 cut-scene movies with an average of 35 seconds each.  I enlisted the help of 3 trusted friends and co-workers, Pete Horner, Tom Syslo and Jeremy Bowker  to get the job done well and on time.  The game looks really amazing this year and the cut-scenes were super fun to work on.

Three of us worked at Skywalker Sound, while Tom remained in L.A.  I built a custom Filemaker pro database which tracked all of the moving parts of the project. … More

Pandora Web Spots

Over the summer I created sound design and mixed a series of 4 spots for the popular web radio site Pandora.  The spots were created by my old friend Nick Seuser and his company 129 films.  Nick and his crew did a really amazing job of promoting Pandora and the music heard on the site without using any of the artists original music!  These spots were created very quickly but it does not show.  I had a great time working on these.

The Simpsons Movie

This is a snippet from The Simpsons Movie for which I cut some sound effects. I worked on this film as a sound editor and an assistant sound editor for a period of time. It was an extremely busy film to work on! The producers and writers made lots changes throughout the course of making this film. Often major changes came down while mixing, which is rare for a film. That made for an extremely busy time on the 2 mix stages while I was working on the show.

Many of the fantastic sound effects cut for this films’ soundtrack unfortunately never made it into the final mix. In this case an amazing team was hired and headed by sound designer and mixer Chris Scrabosio.

The Batman

I worked on The Batman, the animated series that aired on The kids WB for 3 series.  I truly loved working on this show, regardless of  how challenging it was.  I was a sound effects editor for this series working with the seasoned pros at Hacienda Post in Los Angeles.  I received 3 Emmys awards, 4 Emmy nominations, and 1 Golden Reel award while editing sound for this show.  Every episode was an adventure and more exciting than the last. … More

Star Wars: Clone Wars

This was the original Clone Wars series created by Genndy Tartakovsky for which I was the sole sound editor and re-recording mixer.  This series was great fun to work on, not only because I got to work daily with the awesome Star Wars sound effects library created by Ben Burtt but because Genndy and his crew did such an amazing job of creating a super exciting, action packed series.

Automorphosis

Automorphosis is a fantastic film written and directed by Harrod Blank on which I was so happy to have been the sound editor on.  This project is Harrods’ second film on the topic of Art Cars and was 15 years in the making.  In 2009, I helped Harrod get his project out of the Media Xpress system that dated back to 1994 and into a ProTools rig for me to edit and premix on.  Good thing I had years of experience with that system when I was the studio manager and Studio 111 in the mid 90′s.  There were lots of technical hoops to jump through!  Harrod is now running an Art Car Museum in Arizona, I can’t wait to visit!  I highly recommend this film and the supporting book if you have any interest in the subject.

The Force Unleashed

This is a clip of DMM audio from the LucasArts title The Force Unleashed.

This game was a huge success for LucasArts and I am so glad I had the opportunity to work on it.  I was involved with this title for about a year, working on it in between other jobs, and I saw first hand what a very large undertaking it was for the entire team.
